Philip Lancaster
Encroaching Shadows for solo piano

A cycle of 17 haiku for solo piano, based on poems by the Swedish poet and Nobel Laureate, Tomas Tranströmer. Just as a haiku is comprised of 17 syllables, each of the movements of this cycle is just 17 bars long, lasting between 40 seconds and 1'20. The whole cycle charts a journey from blazing light to shadow. It can be performed as a single whole, in three sections, or as single haiku selected freely from across the work.

Each piece is prefaced by the haiku by Tranströmer that inspired it, both in the poet’s original Swedish and in Robin Fulton’s English translation.

‘Encroaching Shadows’ has been recorded by Jelena Makarova for release by Resonus Classics in autumn 2026.
